JOB SUMMARY:

We are looking for a passionate and committed individual who is able to assist us with providing mapping and analysis services to a range of clients, primarily indigenous communities. The GIS Technician Co-op will join a dynamic team of professionals and support the production of a range of geospatial deliverables associated with use and occupancy studies, natural resource, and archaeological projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create high quality cartographic maps
  • Research, assemble and summarize data
  • Scan, georeference and digitize features from paper and mylar maps
  • Verify and check data to ensure continuity, integrity and compliance with standards
  • Create, maintain and analyze spatial and attribute databases
  • Setup and manage geospatial tools to support field reconnaissance
  • Assist with other projects and duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES:

 Education/Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in Geography, Natural Resource Management, Information Management Systems or a related field or concentration
  • Completion of at least one GIS course

Technical Skills:

  • Knowledge and understanding of GIS principles and mapping systems
  • Familiarity with georeferencing and digitization techniques
  • Training and experience with GIS-related applications including ESRI ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online
  • Familiarity with and commitment to practice effective data management procedures and standards
  • Current knowledge and understanding of latest GIS trends, applications and data technology
  • Knowledge and experience with provincial fish, aquatic, wildlife, or terrestrial ecosystems spatial datasets or datasets similar in size and scope

Cartographic and Presentation Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of map design principles
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Artistic design skills – know how to make good-looking maps and other visual products

Personal Skills:

  • A high attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to follow instructions and existing methodologies precisely
  • Ability to interact and work with others and communicate effectively
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing priorities
  • Understanding and/or interest of First Nations history and perspectives
