Inlailawatash Archaeology has been active in a wide-range of Cultural Resource Management (CRM) projects, heritage management studies, educational programs, and research-based investigations. Working with Inlailawatash Archaeology presents unique, rewarding, and challenging opportunities for professional archaeologists that desire to work closely with and for Indigenous communities and develop well-rounded expertise in the field of archaeology.
The Archaeologist (Entry Level) will join a dynamic team of professionals within the Archaeology Department of Inlailawatash. The candidate will gain experience participating in all aspects of archaeological work in and around the Lower Mainland including fieldwork, lab work, and reporting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Contribute to a collaborative team environment.
- Providing project management support for small-scale, basic Inlailawatash projects.
- Participating in verifying data (spatial or otherwise) relating to archaeological assessment.
- Participating in the planning and coordination of fieldwork activities.
- Represents the Company and interacts with First Nations, clients, the public, First Nations
- community members, officials, and contractors.
- Participating in fieldwork activities including survey, shovel-testing, excavation, data collection, field notes and recording.
- Participating in literature reviews for background research relating to permits and reporting for proposed development areas, including RAAD and PARL searches.
- Assisting in drafting First Nations heritage permit applications.
- Assisting in post-fieldwork analysis and interpretation of data and findings.
- Assisting in preparation of draft and final reports for clients, government, and First Nations.
- Assisting in the development and writing of site management recommendations.
- Maintaining strong working relationships with local First Nations representatives.
- Performing other duties as required.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Coordination and scheduling of field crew.
- Fieldwork in variable conditions and weather.
- Works near/with potentially dangerous machinery near open excavation units (with appropriate
- safety precautions and PPE).
- Occasional fieldwork outside normal office hours.
- Ability to work remotely, outside of the Lower Mainland.
- Physically demanding work environment involving tasks such as hiking, bending, raking, shoveling, lifting, screening, and troweling.
- Work on small projects or portion of larger projects.
- Fast-paced shared-office working conditions, with the option to work from home.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Currently in post-secondary school with a major in Archaeology or Anthropology with a specialty in Archaeology.
- Completion of a post-secondary archaeology field school.
- High level of physical fitness.
- Demonstrated ability to take adequate field notes, including photography.
- Basic understanding of lithic technology and artifact identification.
- Basic operation of field equipment including GPS, hip-chain and compass.
- Experience with orienteering/navigation.
- Demonstrated ability to create field maps.
- Excellent computer skills for transferring basic digitized map data to reports.
- Experience driving 4x4 / off-road vehicles is considered an asset.
- Class 5 Driver’s License and a clean driver’s abstract are considered an asset.
- Ability and confidence to work with First Nations field representatives.
- Excellent written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
- Ability to remain calm, professional, objective, and constructive.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to work within a strong and positive safety culture.
- Ability to pay keen attention to even the smallest of details.
- Ability to seek assistance and/or review regarding areas outside of expertise.
- Ability to take direction and feedback from senior personnel.
- Excellent word-processing and report-formatting in Microsoft Office.
- Canadian resident (citizen or landed immigrant status).
DESIRED SKILLS, CERTIFICATES, TRAINING, AND ABILITIES:
- CRM certificate is considered an asset.
- Occupational First Aid Level 1 is considered an asset.
- Willingness to enroll in various types of safety training at Inlailawatash expense.
