Inlailawatash Archaeology has been active in a wide-range of Cultural Resource Management (CRM) projects, heritage management studies, educational programs, and research-based investigations. JOB SUMMARY:

The Archaeologist (Level 3) will join a dynamic team of professionals within the Archaeology Department of Inlailawatash. The role contributes to a collaborative team lead by the Senior Archaeology Manger to ensure efficient fulfillment of Inlailawatash project and client demands. The position requires that the candidate have both field director and HCA S.12.2 and 12.4 permit holder status for Coastal British Columbia. Permit-holder status in the Interior Plateau and the Subarctic/Boreal Forest is an asset.  Compensation will be commensurate with experience.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide updates regarding project management portfolio, financial summaries, and overall direction for Inlailawatash Archaeology to the Senior Manager.
  • Applying for and receiving HCA S.12.2 and 12.4 heritage permits.
  • Meeting Archaeology Branch submission deadlines for S.12.2 and 12.4 permit reports.
  • Performing Field Director duties for Inlailawatash projects.
  • Identifying and securing projects relating to archaeology and heritage management.
  • Providing project management for a selected portfolio of ILP projects.
  • Writing proposals, scope, and cost estimates for projects.
  • Invoicing clients or assisting with invoicing.
  • Liaising with proponents/clients, the Archaeology Branch, and First Nations.
  • Uploading files to the Archaeology Branch APTS system.
  • Verifying data (spatial and otherwise) relating to archaeological assessment.
  • Planning, coordinating, and participating in fieldwork logistics and activities.
  • Representing the Company and interacting with First Nations, clients, the public, First Nations community members, officials, and contractors.
  • Providing leadership, mentoring, and supervision in the field and office.
  • Implementing safety plans and tail-gate safety meetings.
  • Undertaking and supervising fieldwork activities including survey, shovel-testing, excavation, data collection, field notes and recording.
  • Undertaking literature reviews for background research relating to permitting and reporting for proposed development areas, including RAAD and PARL searches.
  • Drafting Archaeology Branch S.12.2 and S.12.4 heritage permit applications for submission.
  • Submitting applications for First Nations heritage permits.
  • Undertaking post-fieldwork analysis and interpretation of data and findings.
  • Preparing draft and final reports for clients, government, and First Nations.
  • Developing and writing site management recommendations.
  • Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with local First Nations representatives.
  • Performing other duties as required.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and in a team environment.
  • Coordination and scheduling of field crew.
  • Fieldwork in variable conditions and weather.
  • Works near/with potentially dangerous machinery near open excavation units (with appropriate safety precautions and PPE).
  • Occasional fieldwork outside normal office hours.
  • Ability to work remotely, outside of the Lower Mainland.
  • Physically demanding work environment involving tasks such as hiking, bending, raking, shoveling, lifting, screening, and troweling.
  • Work on small projects or portion of larger projects.
  • Fast-paced shared-office working conditions (working from home during COVID-19 Pandemic).

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Minimum of a master’s degree or equivalent work experience in Archaeology or Anthropology.
  • Completion of a post-secondary archaeology field school, with experience as a field school teaching assistantship considered an asset.
  • Meets the minimum requirements of field experience for Field Director certification and permit holder according to Archaeology Branch regulations.
  • Excellent organizational and verbal/written communication skills.
  • High level of physical fitness.
  • Demonstrated ability to take adequate field notes, including photography, and to supervise field crew in these activities.
  • Superior understanding of lithic technology and artifact identification.
  • Ability to recognize human remains in the field.
  • Experienced operation of field equipment including GPS, chain and compass.
  • Experience with orienteering/navigation.
  • Demonstrated ability to create field maps.
  • Excellent computer skills for transferring basic digitized map data to reports.
  • Experience driving 4x4/ offroad vehicles.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License and a clean drivers abstract.
  • Ability and confidence to lead a team with First Nations field representatives.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, objective, and constructive.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work within a strong and positive safety culture.
  • Ability to pay keen attention to even the smallest of details.
  • Ability to seek assistance and/or review regarding areas outside of expertise.
  • Ability to take direction and feedback from senior personnel.
  • Excellent word-processing and report-formatting skills in Microsoft Office, and project management software.
  • Canadian resident (citizen or landed immigrant status).
  • Knowledge of First Nation culture or previous experience working with First Nation communities and organizations.

 

DESIRED SKILLS, CERTIFICATES, TRAINING, AND ABILITIES:

  • Professional membership with an archaeological association or society involved in BC Archaeology.
  • CRM certificate from post-secondary institution.
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1.
  • Willingness to enroll in various types of safety training at Inlailawatash expense.
