Inlailawatash Archaeology has been active in a wide-range of Cultural Resource Management (CRM) projects, heritage management studies, educational programs, and research-based investigations. JOB SUMMARY:
The Archaeologist (Level 2) will join a dynamic team of professionals within the Archaeology Department of Inlailawatash. Archaeologists in this role will have Field Director status as per the BC Archaeology Branch regulations. The role involves developing proposals, scope, and cost estimates for clients. Obtaining First Nations heritage permits and assisting in drafting S.12.2 and S.12.4 heritage permit applications for submission to the Archaeology Branch is an important aspect of this position. Supervision of field projects and field crews, undertaking background research and report writing on archaeological and heritage-related projects, and conducting and supervising laboratory and mapping analysis are also important aspects of this role. The candidate will have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, with a master’s degree, or equivalent experience preferred. A thorough understanding of the regulatory requirements of the BC Heritage Conservation Act is required. The successful candidate must be willing to work as a member of a team, willing to perform both routine technical work and complex tasks, and willing to develop new technical knowledge and skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Providing updates regarding project management portfolios, financial summaries, and overall direction for Inlailawatash Archaeology to the Senior Archaeologist & Manager.
- Performing Field Director duties for Inlailawatash projects.
- Identifying and securing projects relating to archaeology and heritage management.
- Writing proposals, scope, and cost estimates for projects.
- Communicate with the Archaeology Coordinator regarding administrative and project coordination.
- Liaison with proponents/clients, the Archaeology Branch, and First Nations.
- Uploading files to the Archaeology Branch APTS system.
- Verifying data (spatial and otherwise) relating to archaeological assessment.
- Planning, coordinating, and participating in fieldwork logistics and activities.
- Represents the Company and interacts with First Nations, clients, the public, First Nations community members, officials, and contractors.
- Providing leadership, mentoring, and supervision in the field.
- Implementing safety plans and tail-gate safety meetings.
- Undertaking and supervising fieldwork activities including survey, shovel-testing, excavation, data collection, field notes and recording.
- Undertaking literature reviews for background research relating to permitting and reporting for proposed development areas, including RAAD and PARL searches.
- Drafting Archaeology Branch S.12.2 and 12.4 heritage permit applications for submission.
- Submitting applications for First Nations heritage permits.
- Undertaking post-fieldwork analysis and interpretation of data and findings.
- Preparing draft and final reports for clients, government, and First Nations.
- Developing and writing site management recommendations.
- Maintaining strong working relationships with local First Nations representatives.
- Performing other duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and in a team environment.
- Coordination and scheduling of field crew.
- Fieldwork in variable conditions and weather.
- Works near/with potentially dangerous machinery near open excavation units (with appropriate safety precautions and PPE).
- Occasional fieldwork outside normal office hours.
- Ability to work remotely, outside of the Lower Mainland, and in remote locations.
- Physically demanding work environment involving tasks such as hiking, bending, raking, shoveling, lifting, screening, and troweling.
- Work on small projects or portion of larger projects.
- Fast-paced shared-office working conditions, with the option to work from home.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with a major in Archaeology or Anthropology with a specialty in Archaeology; a master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
- Completion of a post-secondary archaeology field school preferred, with experience as a field school teaching assistantship considered an asset.
- Meets the minimum requirements of field experience for Field Director eligibility according to Archaeology Branch regulations.
- Excellent organizational and verbal/written communication skills.
- High level of physical fitness.
- Demonstrated ability to take adequate field notes, including photography, and to supervise field crew in these activities.
- Superior understanding of lithic technology and artifact identification.
- Ability to recognize human remains in the field.
- Experienced operation of field equipment including GPS, hip-chain and compass.
- Experience with orienteering/navigation.
- Demonstrated ability to create field maps.
- Excellent computer skills for transferring basic digitized map data to reports.
- Experience driving 4x4 /off-road vehicles.
- Class 5 Driver’s License and a clean driver’s abstract.
- Ability and confidence to work with First Nations field representatives.
- Excellent written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
- Ability to remain calm, professional, objective, and constructive.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to work within a strong and positive safety culture.
- Ability to pay keen attention to even the smallest of details.
- Ability to seek assistance and/or review regarding areas outside of expertise.
- Ability to take direction and feedback from senior personnel.
- Excellent word-processing and report-formatting in Microsoft Office.
- Canadian resident (citizen or landed immigrant status).
DESIRED SKILLS, CERTIFICATES, TRAINING, AND ABILITIES:
- CRM certificate from post-secondary institution.
- Occupational First Aid Level 1.
- Willingness to enroll in various types of safety training at Inlailawatash expense.
