Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and knowledgeable Urban Forester to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing expert tree assessments, risk management, and arboricultural consulting services. You will work closely with clients to address their specific needs and deliver comprehensive reports that guide tree care decisions, including recommendations for pruning, preservation, and removal. 

This role requires a strong foundation in tree biology, tree risk assessment, and ISA arboriculture standards. As a consulting arborist, you will also be expected to engage in educational outreach, share arboricultural knowledge, and ensure that all work complies with local regulations/ Bylaws. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Tree Assessment & Consultation 
    • Perform detailed tree health and risk assessments, including evaluation of tree structure, diseases, and pests. 
    • Understand and can administer and implement urban forest strategies. Inclusive of developing tree bylaws and urban forest planning. 
    • Advise clients on tree preservation strategies, appropriate maintenance plans, and safety measures for trees in urban and rural settings. 
    • Provide written, professional reports, including tree condition evaluations, treatment recommendations, and risk assessments and replanting plans. 
    • Offer expert advice on tree protection during construction & development projects and other land development activities. 
    • Provide consultation for clients seeking tree assessments for insurance, legal disputes, or tree removal. 
  • Project Management 
    • Manage multiple arboricultural consulting projects simultaneously, ensuring timely and quality completion. 
    • Collaborate with other professionals (e.g., engineers, landscape architects, urban planners) to provide integrated solutions. 
    • Maintain communication with clients, offering updates on project status and any necessary adjustments to plans. 
    • Ensure projects are completed and closed out with appropriate invoicing. 
  • Risk Management & Safety 
    • Evaluate and identify potential hazards posed by trees, including risks related to storm damage, structural issues, and public safety. 
    • Provide recommendations to mitigate risks, including tree pruning, bracing, cabling, or removal, as necessary. 
    • Assist in post-storm assessments and emergency tree care situations. 
    • Assist clients with the provincial Firesmart Program. 
  • Client Education & Outreach 
    • Educate clients and stakeholders on best practices in tree care and management. 
    • Host seminars, workshops, or training sessions as needed to enhance understanding of arboricultural issues. 
    • Maintain strong client relationships and provide ongoing support for tree care strategies. 
  • Administrative & Reporting 
    • Prepare detailed, clear, and professional written reports that document tree assessments, action plans, and recommendations. 
    • Maintain accurate records of consultations, assessments, and client interactions. 
    • Stay updated on current arboricultural research, technologies, and industry best practices. 

 

Qualifications & Requirements 

  • Education: 
    • Bachelor's degree in Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, Environmental Science, or a related field (preferred). 
    • Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of formal education. 
  • Certification: 
    • ISA Certified Arborist is required. 
    • ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) or other advanced certifications (e.g., Certified Treecare Safety Professional, ISA Board Certified Master Arborist) are highly desirable. 
  • Experience: 
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in arboriculture, with at least 1-2 years in a consulting or tree risk assessment role. 
    • Proven experience in tree health assessments, risk management, and consulting for residential, First Nations, commercial, or municipal clients. 
    • Experience with tree care safety protocols, regulations, and industry standards. 
  • Skills: 
    • Strong knowledge of tree biology, pathology, entomology, and soil science. 
    • Expertise in tree risk assessment protocols, structural pruning, and preservation strategies. 
    • Proficient in the use of arboricultural tools and equipment. 
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex technical information in an accessible manner. 
    • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills. 
    • Familiarity with industry software (e.g., ArborCAD, CAD, TreeKeeper, GIS  
    • applications) is a plus. 
  • Physical Requirements: 
    • Ability to conduct fieldwork in various weather conditions and physical environments. 
    • Able to navigate various terrain in both urban settings and remote settings. 
    • Ability to work alone.  

 

  • Work Environment: 
  • Primarily field-based with a mix of office work for report writing, client communication, and research. 

 

Travel: Occasional travel required for on-site consultations and assessments. 

 

Working Hours: 40-hour per week;  flexible options available & overtime as required. Flexibility in scheduling may be required for project deadlines and client needs. 

 

Expected Start Date: As soon as possible, willing to wait for the right candidate.

 

Compensation: $28.85/h-36.06/h CAD($60,000-70,000 annually); Plus, Extended Health Benefits & Pension Plan
